Where to stay in Toluca

About Toluca

With its characterful old town and colonial roots, Toluca is a great place to immerse yourself in local Mexican culture. Despite being one hour from Mexico City, it feels worlds away from the chaotic capital with its pedestrian-friendly streets, sun-dappled plazas, boutique art galleries and beautifully-curated museums.

Things to do

Start your Toluca holiday with a stroll around the picturesque old town. It’s anchored by Plaza de los Mártires, a vast public square flanked by the neoclassical Toluca Cathedral and the imposing Government Palace.

Wander one block to the south to find yourself in a lively pedestrian precinct ringed by elegant archways. From trendy cafes and chocolatiers to tiny taco restaurants and cosy bars, it’s a great place to soak up the lively street scene.

Escape the heat at the shady Parque Alameda. The Cosmovitral botanical garden is another urban escape, with more than 3,500 square metres of lush gardens housed under a magnificent stained-glass canopy.

Toluca doesn’t scrimp on culture, with a string of unique museums to explore. The Museo de Arte Moderno celebrates contemporary masters like Tamayo and Orozco, while the Museo de Antropología e História uncovers Mexico’s prehistoric past with a fantastic collection of ancient artefacts and religious icons on display.

Getting around

Toluca’s historic district is compact and easily explore on foot. However, taxis are the easiest way to travel beyond downtown Toluca. Just 10 kilometres from the old town, Toluca International Airport is a fantastic alternative to Mexico City’s airport.
