About The Christchurch Botanic Gardens

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are the green heart of downtown Christchurch New Zealand next to Hagley Park and along the central circular expanse of the Avon River. The Botanic Gardens enclose a large concentration of plants native to the area as well as exotic varieties making for a diverse and enticing tourist attraction.

Its allures are centred by the Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre boasting a cafe, interactive exhibition of the location’s history and a gift shop. The green space is broken up into separate gardens including the Herb Garden and its collection of medicinal plants, the Central Rose Garden and the Heritage Rose Garden, both of which embrace countless varieties of respective foliage. Also, the site contains a conservatory, rock garden and water garden.

The Christchurch downtown public bus services routes to nearby stops along Riccarton Avenue. Walking and cycling are the most popular forms of transit throughout the area due to its proximity to the central business district and other city attractions. There are also two large public car parks located on site.

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens were birthed out of a single English oak tree planted in the mid-1800s. The tree was planted to memorialise the historically important marriage of Prince Albert and Princess Alexandra of Denmark.
