Where to stay in Tarija

About Tarija

Known as Bolivia’s premier grape growing region, Tarija is a great place for wine lovers. The laid-back Tarija also boasts excellent museums, restored mansions and picturesque lakes and waterfalls.

Things to do

A trip to Tarija isn’t complete without sampling some of its local delicacies on a vineyard tour. Visit the region’s excellent wineries, such as Casa Vieja, on a guided tour and marvel at the beauty of the wine growing valleys of nearby La Concepcion.

Step back in time at Casa Dorada, a restored mansion of a wealthy 19th-century merchant. Step inside to see the fascinating collection of lavish antique furniture and gain insight into the opulence of Bolivia’s yesteryear. Those in search of the paranormal can explore El Castillo Azul, the eccentric blue and white Art Nouveau mansion said to be haunted.

Take a break at the San Jacinto Dam, a tranquil lake dotted with restaurants serving traditional Bolivian cuisine. Try the local speciality, cangrejos, which are tiny crabs eaten whole. If you’d rather relax in a refreshing swimming hole, visit the Tomaititas and Coimata waterfalls.

San Lorenzo is the perfect day trip from Tarija, located only 15 kilometres away. Wander the streets to admire colonial-era buildings and browse the Moto Mendez Museum, which is dedicated to the famous Bolivian war hero Eustaquio Mendez.

Getting around

You can fly into Capitan Oriel Lea Plaza Airport, located four kilometres from Tarija’s city centre. Using buses and taxis is the best way to get around Tarija, with long-distance buses travelling to La Paz, Sucre and Santa Cruz.
