Sucre’s main square, Plaza 25 de Mayo, is one of the prettiest plazas in Bolivia. Browse its collection of trendy restaurants, cafes and elegant colonial buildings, then visit Convento de San Felipe Neri to see a former monastery with stunning views of Sucre from its rooftop terrace.

History enthusiasts can explore Casa de Libertad, a museum that pays homage to when Bolivia declared its independence in 1825 with the original document on display. Don’t miss seeing the pink fairy-tale Glorieta Castle, which once housed a prince and princess. Admire its eclectic architecture with Dutch Renaissance, Byzantine and Italian influences, then step inside to see elaborately decorated ceilings.

Get some retail therapy at one of the many local markets around town. Mercado Central is a farmers’ market with herbs, spices and fresh fruits and vegetables, while Tarabuco Market is renowned for its locally-crafted tapestries, bags and hats.

Travelling with kids? Head to Parque Cretacico to explore a fun dinosaur park showcasing the world’s largest collection of well-preserved prehistoric footprints with 15 different species. Admire the extensive collection of life-size fibreglass dinosaur models and stroll through the informative museum.

Getting around

You can fly into Sucre Airport, only five kilometres from the city centre, while long-distance buses travel from La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. Sucre can be explored on foot, while taxis, tourist buses and private vehicles access the surrounding region.
