About Shaoxing

Shaoxing is a beautiful city lying south of the Yangtze River in China. Its unique history spans over 2,500 years. Famous for its traditional Chinese bridges, architecture, wine and textiles, the picture postcard city invites visitors to step into authentic China. A unique area to explore, Shaoxing is a city which encompasses the past, present and future.

Downtown Shaoxing boasts rich cultural treats and myriad ancient relics. The area is known as the “Museum without Walls” and the “Ancient Town on the Water”. Locals living in the canal areas get around via wupeng boat. Like the Venetian gondola, they offer sturdy water transportation. A main attraction of Shaoxing is Lu Xun’s Former Residence. The attractive home and museum offer insight into the writer’s life and works. With exhibits, photographs and manuscripts to explore, it is a wonderful place to discover the legend of Lu Xun. A region of great interest to both locals and tourists incorporates the Tomb of Yu the Great and East Lake. As majestic cliffs sweep down into the green water, cliffs are etched with grottoes, sculptures and bridges. It’s the perfect place to photograph wildlife and scenery. Arrive early to capture the morning mist while gliding along in a traditional boat. Shaoxing has exceptional dining establishments serving local dishes and Sichuan cuisine. Try the rice wine, a local specialty, and the Strong Fried Bean Curd or tasty Steamed Pork with Preserved Vegetables.

The easiest way to get around Shaoxing is via bus, as multiple bus routes operate in the downtown area. The centre is also easy to walk around with temples, monuments and canal areas within walking distance of each other. Taxis are easy to spot in Shaoxing, each has a symbol painted on the side, making them distinctive for tourists.

Shaoxing was named in 1131, during the Southern Song dynasty. Modern day Shaoxing is located in the capital of the Spring and the Autumn Period Kingdom of Yue, and its ancient history can still be uncovered today. Although the city is making great contemporary strides, the past is still evident in Shaoxing’s charming streets, canal side houses and its art, crafts and cuisine.
