Where to stay in Petermann

About Petermann

Serving as a gateway to King's Canyon, Petermann is a cosy country town in the heart of Australia's Red Centre. You can also sign up for scenic helicopter flights, visit historic homesteads and discover local Aboriginal culture.

Things to do

Air tours are one of the best ways to take in the rugged landscapes of the Northern Territory. Local tour operators like Kings Creek Helicopters offer scenic flights over the George Gill Range, where you’ll unlock access to remote destinations like the Petermann Pound crater. Keep an eye out for wild camels and horses grazing below.

Watarrka National Park sits on the western edge of the George Gill Range. It's one of the Northern Territory's most iconic parks, with a wonderland of lush gorges, hidden waterholes and ancient rock formations. King's Canyon is the star attraction, with fiery red sandstone walls that rise over 100 metres.

For a true taste of the outback, head to Kings Creek Station. The historic homestead has been farming cattle and camels since 1981. It's set amongst towering desert oaks and offers you the opportunity to quad bike through the plains and camp under the stars.

The Arrernte people are the traditional owners of Australia's Red Centre. Aboriginal Cultural Tours offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in their ancient traditions. You'll get a chance to throw boomerangs, learn about bush tucker, blend herbal medicine and practice the local language.

Getting around

Petermann is located approximately 1,500 kilometres from Darwin, the Northern Territory's laid-back capital. The easiest way to explore the Red Centre is with a rental car or 4WD, while tour buses are a great alternative for those who don’t want to drive.
