Where to stay in Peníscola

About Peníscola

Peniscola is a sun-drenched town set on the Costa del Azahar. Known as the “City in the Sea”, it’s connected to the mainland by a rocky causeway and surrounded by water on three sides. Bask on gold-sand beaches, swim in the Balearic Sea and stroll along the palm-lined promenade. The historic old town will charm you with its cobbled streets and medieval walls.

Things to do

Beaches are the main attraction in Peniscola, with sunseekers flocking to popular stretches of sand like Pebret and Norte. Both are patrolled by lifeguards and great for families. Bustling South Beach is lined with restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood and fruity sangria. Venture south to discover hidden bays and coves.

Peniscola Castle dates back to the 13th century and commands sweeping views over the coast. It was built by the Knights Templar and has been reimagined as a living history museum. Strolling around the castle, you may recognise it from the hit TV show, Game of Thrones. Your ticket includes entry to Artillery Park, a tranquil garden filled with olive trees and lavender bushes.

When you’ve had your fix of sand and sunshine, head to Serra d’Irta Natural Park to explore its scenic hiking trails and enjoy the lush Mediterranean forest. Some trails lead to hidden beaches and others take you to centuries-old castles and watchtowers.

The clifftop town of Morella is a popular Peniscola day trip and is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Get lost in the maze-like streets lined with whitewashed buildings. Many have been reimagined as colourful souvenir shops selling arts and crafts, wine, honey and other treats.

Getting around

Peniscola is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The town is located on the Costa del Azahar, a two-hour drive from Valencia and 2.5 hours from Barcelona. Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport is a 2.5-hour drive away.
