Things to do

Forte Mare dominates Herceg Novi, and it should be the first place on your sightseeing list. Built by the Bosnian King Tvrtko 1 in 1382, this impressive stone fortress looks out to sea. The citadel is in ruins, but you can still appreciate its scale and strength.

Take the time to wander the streets of Old Town and sit in the squares, looking up at the historic architecture. Pop into the churches and boutiques, and enjoy a coffee or ice-cream in a cafe in one of the plazas. If you want to see the Old Town from above, climb up to the observation deck on the clock tower, which was once part of the main city gate.

Perfect for a sunny afternoon, take a boat trip from Herceg Novi to the Blue Grotto, a natural cave complex along the Lustica Peninsula. You can swim in the cove and also inside the cave itself. A shaft of light cuts through the rock, illuminating the crystal clear water below and giving it a striking, bluish glow.

Getting around

The historic centre of Herceg Novi is small enough to explore on foot, and as many of the streets are narrow and easy to get around. If you do want to travel to the outskirts of the town, taxis are readily available.
