About Half Moon Bay

Located in California’s San Mateo County, the city of Half Moon Bay lies just to the south of San Francisco. It blends a spectacular coastline with a vibrant artistic community and heritage-listed sites to make it a popular tourist destination in Northern California.

Half Moon Bay is renowned for its natural beauty both on and offshore, with the Montara and Pillar Point marine reserves extending offshore and numerous protected beaches to explore on land. On the northern edge of Half Moon Bay lies the Pillar Point harbour, a protected landing for boats and the location of the big wave known as “Mavericks” which lures adventurous surfers from near and far. Fishermen arrive at Half Moon Bay’s harbour with boats laden with fish and crabs, which are sold to nearby restaurants renowned for their seafood. Half Moon Bay has become a favourite residential area for artists, and a collective known as the Colony of Coastside Artists operate numerous galleries and studios, together with an annual Art and Pumpkin Festival. History buffs will find their calling at the William Adam Simmons House, the Robert Mills Dairy Barn and the James Johnston House, all of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Just to the south of Half Moon Bay lies the ghost town of Purissima which was one of the first towns in the San Mateo area and largely abandoned prior to World War II, while the community of Princeton-by-the-Sea lies just to the north.

The city is easily accessed via the Half Moon Bay Airport and by public bus services along the coast. For those self-driving, the city is situated along the Cabrillo Highway which runs north to south along the Californian coastline.

Originally established as a cattle and horse grazing area for the Mission San Francisco de Asis during the late 18th century, Half Moon Bay emerged as San Mateo’s first town during the 1840s. It was originally named San Benito, then Spanish Town, before becoming Half Moon Bay in 1874 and attracting a diverse community of immigrants from across the globe.
