Where to stay in Büyükada

About Büyükada

Also known as “Great Island”, Buyukada greets you with its Ottoman harbour, aquamarine water and gingerbread house-style villas cascading down the hillsides. It's an oasis of old-world tranquillity with its gorgeous beaches, forested hiking trails and horse-drawn carriages.

Things to do

The extravagant Splendid Palas Hotel is the island's signature landmark, harking back to the days when Buyukada was a retreat for Byzantine royalty. It's topped by a pair of soaring domes and is a fantastic place to enjoy afternoon tea, sunset cocktails or sumptuous seafood.

The Museum of the Princes' Islands offers a fascinating glimpse at the archipelago's ancient past. It leaves no stone unturned, with exhibitions on native flora, local food, cultural festivals and historic Ottoman architecture.

Fringed by golden sand and lush pine trees, Aya Nikola Beach is perfect for sunbathing, exploring tidal pools or cooling off in the sparkling Marmara Sea. The secluded Halik Bay Beach is another favourite with its crystal-clear water.

For the island's best panoramas, head up to the Church and Monastery of St George, which dates back to the 1700s. It's perched on a hillside and commands sweeping views over the coast. The gentle hike to the summit takes around one hour. Afterwards, reward yourself with a serving of dondurma, a local Turkish ice cream.

Getting around

Buyukada is the largest island in Turkey's Adalar archipelago, accessible via sea buses or local ferries. The pedestrian-friendly island is best explored on foot or by riding on bicycles or horse-drawn carriages.
